Maybe you're a diehard MMA fan, maybe you’re a boxing purist and swear by it as the only true combat sport worth any respect. You might be a fight fanatic in general, or quite possibly, you have no idea what goes on inside a boxing ring. No matter what category you might fall in, you should know what is happening Saturday, August 26th. It is undisputedly the most talked about event in fight history: Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor.
There has been a healthy mixture of excitement and controversy surrounding this matchup since it was officially announced. What should the specifications of the fight be? What will the fight do for the sport of boxing? Is it truly even worth the time to find out? If you are a big sports fan then yes, it is. Mayweather vs. McGregor will be the first ever fight in which an MMA fighter will jump into the boxing ring against a talented and well-renounced boxer. The sports are completely different, which will make this night extremely entertaining.
Yes, Mayweather is one of the best recognized boxing champions alive. Yes, McGregor is in large part an upstart big talker who has done more with his mouth than any other part of his body to garner this match-up, looking to prove a longshot point that he is the best fighter in the world. This on paper is no question a lopsided matchup. Which is why many have stopped, rescheduled and planned their night around this event. And if the fast talking Irishman with the deadly right hand can pull off the upset, it will prove to live up to its billing as the most entertaining night of combat sports.
As if this night couldn’t get any more exciting, the main undercard event features Floyd Mayweather protege and Baltimore native Gervonta “Tank” Davis. He’ll be taking on Francisco Fonseca, who is headlining the fight night undercard. Davis, 22, has been touted by Mayweather to be the next mega-star to emerge in boxing. Davis has stated that Mayweather intends to “pass the torch” on to him. With a Mayweather win and an impressive performance by Davis we could all be witness to a significant step to that happening on Saturday night and will mean no only a huge night in combat sports, but also a huge night in Baltimore sports.
The truth is, these questions no matter how heavily debated, can only be answered Sunday morning. Saturday night is well worth your time to come watch the answers to those questions reveal themselves with us at the QG.
