The Blood & Sand Cocktail + La Gloria Cubana

This recipe first popped up in the Savoy Cocktail Book in 1930, with the title thought to be a nod to Rudolf Valentino’s 1922 silent film of the same name about a Spanish boy who emerged from poverty to become a celebrated bullfighter, only to suffer a tempestuous affair, and later die in the ring. A dark tale for a cocktail but it fits; although sweet-tasting at first, the complex drink is layered with tones of citric sourness from the orange juice and intoxicating smokiness from the whiskey. A mix of equal parts Scotch, sweet vermouth, cherry liqueur and orange juice, shaken and strained into a rocks glass, makes for one of the rare cocktails based on Scotch. The red cherry liqueur is said to represent the “blood,” and the orange juice to represent the sand.
