Baby, it’s cold outside! Winter has finally arrived and although some of us are crossing our fingers for a snow day to heal our minds from life’s everyday stress, we should not forget to heal our skin either. Traditionally, winter is a time where we make excuses for bad habits- gaining weight for insulation, drinking booze to keep warm, or substituting sweaters by not shaving- but we must not skip out on facials during the colder season. Here are the top 3 common winter skin myths that need to be busted:
MYTH 1: Winter isn’t as hard on my skin as summer.
Any climate changes can have a harsh effect on our skin, especially during winter months. When temperature lowers, humidity tends to lower as well. And as excess moisture is being evaporated, the frigid air leaves our bodies dehydrated, resulting in dry, irritated skin. A facial helps treat these effects by providing deep cleansing and restoring the skin’s moisture and hydration.
MYTH 2: I don’t need a facial because I don’t have a skin condition.
While it’s true that people with conditions such as eczema and rosacea my have the most quick-tempered flare-ups, people who have thick, resilient skin will still experience some negative response to the winter. That’s right- we’re in this together! In fact, some experts believe that this is the worst season for acne. The air in our houses or in our cars can be extremely drying and the impact of going from hot-to-cold and cold-to-hot leaves our skin over worked and in need of some extra TLC.
MYTH 3: I don’t need to wear sunscreen in the winter.
Although there may be less hours of sunlight in the day during winter months, the sun or UV rays, can have the same effect on our skin all year-round. Whether you’re driving to work or sitting by the same window everyday, any sun exposure to unprotected skin will result in premature aging, such as wrinkles and pigmentation. In fact, UV rays are responsible for up to 90% of aging. Fortunately, winter can be an optimal time to work on pigmentation and smoothing out skin tone texture.
Our skin is our largest organ and it changes regularly as we age. It makes up a large part of how we present ourselves to the world each day, so we want to keep it happy and healthy-looking. With winter in full swing, it may be an ideal time to start working with a skin expert to develop a skincare regime to reach your most ideal and healthiest skin.
